How To Find Your Style Of Singing?

How to Find Your Style of Singing?

Music is so diverse, and there are also many styles of singing.  However, every musical style’s requirements are the same:  good vocal intonation, clear tone, adequate breath support, and projection.  Beginning singers may struggle to find their unique style. At Kelly Music Works, we can help to guide you towards finding your style through an emphasis on practicing the fundamentals. Once you experience this, you will feel determined to do what you love in a unique way.

Your voice is unique.

The biological components that make up your voice are one of a kind. Many singers may worry that modeling other singers will make them sound like a “clone” of other singers, or that they may be “copying” others.

This is a common misconception because we have not yet experienced
the growth that comes from being informed of styles. When you become
aware of the differing vocal qualities and characteristics of certain voices, you become more aware of your ideal style.

Through singing study, your singing style will evolve naturally through practice and experimentation.  We will explore the musical elements of good singing that will help you to find your singing style.

Tips to Help You Find Your Singing Style

Experimenting

This follows the simple premise of “How can you know you like something if you haven’t tried it yet?” Through experimentation, we create new experiences while at the same time learn how to express ourselves through singing. This is how singers grow.  You likely already have a favorite singer or musical genre that you may aspire to get better at.

In any case, listening to diverse genres of singers will help you to explore and ultimately find your style of singing. To grow vocally, one must study good practices, good singing. Through learning about various singing styles we educate ourselves and ultimately that informs the development of our musical tastes.

You may have a favorite singer or music genre like so does everyone else, and you may be tempted to stay within that. Still, listening to diverse genres and singers will aid your quest to find your style of singing. Don’t spare your choices, even when you think it is far from what you can do, because you won’t know until you try.

Also, don’t feel discouraged if you can’t sing like someone else. In the beginning, you have not developed your entire vocal range yet. There is a lot left to learn about your voice. If you find a style that seems to suit your voice, but you don’t like it, it’s not necessary to sing the song exactly as the original performer did. Put your touch on things. After all, it is part of having your style!

Learning About Yourself (In Other Words, Your Vocal Style)

Wondering how to find your singing style? Focus on the vital element of singing, which is your voice. You can’t find your singing style if you don’t discover your natural voice and vocal technique. Learning about it is so much better for your vocal health.

Vocal style refers to your voice type and range (the highest and lowest notes you can reach).

  • As far as voice type goes, there are many of them. Whether bass to soprano, take your time to identify your voice type.
  • Vocal range is something more individual for which getting feedback or assistance is the ideal option.

When discovering your vocal style, you have to embark on the journey of embracing it. Nobody else can do the things you can with your voice. We are confident because as much as we want, we will never sound exactly like other singers. Or anyone else! When you grasp your capabilities, it will be a motor to advance instead of feeling pushed back all the time.

There are many exercises out there for finding your vocal style. A music teacher can help you navigate this and get it right to not harm your voice due to a mistake when figuring out your voice type.

Sing!

Of course, “doing” is the best action to learn. The more you sing, you will both learn how to work with your vocal type and experiment. Getting feedback, listening to your voice, and adding your touch to what you sing will tremendously. All of that is done through practicing your singing.
