Having been a musician and now a teacher for more than two decades, it never ceases to amaze me the impact music can have. It extends to almost every aspect of life. I have been thinking about the particular benefits of singing lessons, which are very diverse, and I wanted to share them here.
I’ve put up a list of my top 5 favorite benefits of singing lessons, for either kids and adults, of various categories: physical, psychological, musical, and more!
1. An Overall Booster for Health
You have probably heard that music and singing themselves are associated with overall good health. But which are the benefits of singing lessons for your health? The truth is, there are so many of them, you could read about them for hours. And they are all backed up by studies!
The Barbershop Harmony Society shares several studies that show the impact of singing on health. Who would have thought! I find the following to be the most impressive ones:
- Boosting the Immune System: People who participated in the study by scientists at the University of Frankfurt in Germany, published in the latest edition of the US Journal of Behavioral Medicine, had “concentrations of immunoglobulin A – proteins in the immune system which function as antibodies – and hydrocortisone, an anti-stress hormone, increased significantly during the rehearsal.”
- Balancing The Body: “Sound therapist Jovita Wallace says, ‘Sound vibrations massage your aura, going straight to what’s out of balance and fixing it.'” What is more incredible about this is that the sound vibrations help balance not one but several parts of the body, from the brain, glands, pancreas, and the immune system as well!
2. Self-Discovery, Acceptance & Personal Style
Learning to sing can be not only a way to use your voice, but for many, it can also be a journey to self-discovery in a healthy way. Research by professor Graham Welch for Non-Profit Organization Sing Up shows that “Successful singing promotes self-esteem, general confidence and also self-efficacy. The voice is a key component of who we are; its use reflects our mood and general psychological well-being, which is communicated to ourselves as well as to others.”
Singing lessons are essential for successful singing. Because of this, a unique benefit of singing lessons is having someone to assist you in using your voice. So, rather than wanting to sound different, through singing lessons, you learn to work with your voice and can discover the beauty in its rarity, eventually finding your style. If you’d like to know more about finding your singing style, we have a whole blog post about it!
3. Improve Your Potential & Repertoire
What we discussed previously leads us to other benefits of singing lessons that go hand in hand. The same Research by Professor Welch also states that “Singing activity fosters our intellectual engagement with music. It includes an understanding of the musical structure, phrasing, the development of musical memory, and tone coloring.”
Additionally, “There are concomitant social and personal benefits through increasing the likelihood of empathic understanding of others and ourselves by the kinds of songs.
As a music teacher, helping students in both technique and repertoire is fundamental. They make up critical pillars of our singing lessons at Kellymusicworks.
When you take singing lessons, your vocal coach or teacher can become a mentor as well. You can learn a lot from your teacher’s experience in technique and get great advice for your singing journey if you want to pursue it on a professional level. Mentoring on its own has multiple benefits, and it can add up to the already significant benefits of singing lessons!
5. Tailored Learning
Last but not least, I share one of the most beneficial aspects of teaching private music lessons: everything tailored to you. Your voice, your musical taste, your needs are all prioritized. As a result, you are learning what you require. Of course, learning things at a broad scale can leave many gaps, but that is why singing lessons are excellent.
If you have taken singing lessons, have you experienced any of these benefits of singing lessons? Have you experienced more benefits? Make sure to let us know. If you haven’t taken singing lessons but are interested, don’t forget that you can start with us, Kellymusicworks. We teach all levels and ages!
